My First Outside Woodworking Project

            My frist outside woodworking project.
About 15 years ago I built this gazebo out of cedar. I bought some cedar logs, 9' long from my neighbor and used a chop saw that I installed near the garden and a hand held saws all, and 6" nails to build my gazebo.  I used a hole digger to dig the six holes for the poles. I then knotched the poles at 5'. Then I installed the poles three feet in the ground and cut and  measured the side pieces. I slipped them into the notched poles and used 6" nails to hold them in place. I then made a roof out of cedar logs going accross starting from the front piece, then accross again sideways. It has been 15 years and it is still holding strong. I grew grape vines on it and an assortment of flowers arround it. The only big mistake I made was that not everyone is 5' 2" tall. My gazebo is just 6' tall , at the time it looked plenty high. I now have sons that have to duck to walk in. However, it does look charming, if I say so myself.

I built a birdhouse,  feeder, gazebo to go with it, that is happily pearched on the top.

I  finally finished my tree cupboard complete with the birds in the nest and the etching of flowers and butterflies. 

I build two drawers with birds carved on them. This whole cupboard was built using a simple glue, screw and cap method of building and carved with a hand held rotary tool and a 5/16" carving bit.

On the right side I incorperated a bird and nest.

I sandblasted a morning glory vine and other flowers and butterflies on the mirror.

Handy Garden Tool Storage Ideas

I Love to garden and have my garden tools  nearby. I built this neat tool garden shelf to store my tools away, but still have them handy when I need them. The shelf protects them from the rain and gives me storage on top. I decorated it with a horse shoe that I found while digging a new garden.  The shelf is also great to dry flowers.

The top and side pieces of wood are a simgle board, and the back boards are just butted together so they can move a little with the weather. You could paint this with wood sealer before the white coat to further  weather proof it.

How To Organize A Small Closet Or Hallway

     How to organize a small hallway or closet.

This closet goes from a bedroom to a bathroom. The space is not wide enough for drawers or a bureau, so I built a set of shelves into the left side of the closet which is in the stairway overhang. This is a good way to use space that was otherwise wasted. The other shelves are just pine boards that have been carved and painted.

This is the left side of the cupboard. I built a tie rack and shelves for storage.

This is the right side of the closet. I painted a yard sale mirror white to match the trim and hung it in the middle of the passageway. On either side I built simple shelves with hooks to hang clothes, handbags, and bath robes, with a little shelf on top for keys, wallets, my makeup bag and  other small items.

This is a tie rack,  but would also make a great rack for scarves or belts.

A simple rose carving adds a little shabby sheek whimsy to the hallway. This is also easy to carve, using a hand held rotary tool and a 5/16" carving bit. The shelf is then painted white, then sanded to give the time worn finish.

I added a top shelf over the door for extra storage. I can store my travel bags and other  seldom used items.

This simple arrangement of hooks provides place for my belts, handbags, bathrobe, and other often used items.

Clothespin Box Woodcworking Plan

                Chloe, Clothespin or Mail Box

This is my newest woodworking plan. Chloe is a charming clothes pin box that features simple rose carvings and a lovely antique black finish. The carving is done with a hand held rotary tool and a 5/16" carving bit, a simple way for the average crafter to achieve great results with just a little practice. The finish is achieved  by painting the box black, sanding it  strategically, and applying a dark brown stain. Two coats of clear outside varnish are then added for protection. This project also makes a great mailbox  Just enlarge the plan slightly. This project is built using the glue, screw and cap method of woodworking which allows even the novice woodworker to achieve great results in a reasonable amount of time and with just a few tools. Covered Magazine Rack or Yarn Rack

       Juliette, Romantic Rose Carved Magazine or Yarn Rack

 Juliette is a lovely covered magazine or yarn rack. She is carved with roses and makes a tidy place to store your magazines or yarn.  This model is Pecan but also comes in Special walnut. You can also sit in your favorite chair and knit until your hearts content.  Just open one side and pull the yarn as you need it.

Simple Handmade Picture and Mirror Frames.

This frame is built with a laminated panel and carved using a new  method of carving that uses  a hand held rotary tool and a 5/16" carving bit. This picture frame was a custom order that was made to fit the canvas. I can  make one for you like the one pictured or with some other design.

This mirror is styled after a hand mirror. This mirror is now available on www.sawtoothideas.com as a woodworking plan. This plan includes a step by step, on how to sandblast the design in the glass, and how to build and carve the frame.
